Journler 2.5.4 available
March 20th, 2008I’m extremely happy to announce the latest and long in the works update to Journler: v2.5.4. Journler 2.5.4 is a Leopard and Tiger compatible upgrade to your favorite journaling application. It is a recommended upgrade for all users. Individuals already using Journler may auto-update from within Journler using the Journal > Check for Updates menu.
Disable password protection
Before installing the 2.5.4 update disable password protection for your journal and re-enable it only after 2.5.4 has been downloaded and installed.
Features
Journler 2.5.4 sports Leopard compatibility and dozens of improvements for both Tiger and Leopard users. Many of the changes are behind the scenes improvements that guarantee a more stable application and consistent user experience. Some of the more significant include…
- Leopard compatibility: many fixes and improvements
- Improved Tiger performance: dozens of fixes and improvements
- All new token based tagging
- Built-in blogging removed; support for 3rd party weblog applications
- Support for MailTags keywords
- Faster PDF importing
- New license: Journler is becoming a shareware application
Improved Tags
Journler 2.5.4 introduces a much improved token based tagging system, one that has become an industry standard for web and desktop applications alike. The new system is considerably more capable than the previous one but may take some getting used to. For help with the transition you can read about Tags and Comments at the Journler wiki.
Blogging
Support for built-in blogging has been dropped in Journler 2.5.4. I realize this is a disappointment for many users but after weighing the options I decided it would be more important for the time being to focus on novel features rather than duplicate what a number of applications already available for the Macintosh do quite well. In its place Journler has added support for the weblog protocol, ensuring integration between Journler and some of the most popular blogging applications for the Mac. I hope to re-introduce built-in blogging at a later point. Read more.
The new license
It was a difficult decision, but Journler is in the process of becoming a shareware application. Previous versions distinguished between a personal and a non-personal license. That distinction no longer applies. All uses of Journler now require a license. A single license costs $34.95 with educational, family and bulk discounts available.
Read more about this decision.
Journler 2.5.4 is meant to help users transition to the new license. With the release of Journler 2.6 there will be a 60 day trial period after which a license is required. Journler 2.5.4 introduces the new license without imposing a trial period. A license is still required with Journler 2.5.4, and I request that anyone using Journler on a regular basis purchase it. Users who purchase a license now will be able to upgrade to 2.6 at no additional charge.
Happy journaling, and yay Journler 2.5.4!

I’m confused. Does this mean that if I use the automatic updater, I will download a program that will suddenly stop working if I don’t pony up $35?

@bluesdance
Definitely not. In fact I carefully planned the next few updates exactly to avoid that situation. 2.5.4 introduces the new license without imposing a trial period so that users who upgrade to it can continue using the program even if that don’t pay. I considered this essential because 2.5.4 fixes a number of Leopard problems.
Beginning with 2.6, however, there will be a 60 day trial period after which the program requires a license. Of course I am requesting that all users who consistently use Journler purchase a license. 2.5.4 *requires* a license even if there is no trial period. It is these purchases that permit me to continue working on Journler.

Awesome. I was on the verge of moving to something else with all the crashes I was having under Leopard before. But this fixed it, and added new features to boot. Once again, a great product!

@ideapower
Definitely. 2.5.3 was Leopard incompatible in a number of ways, and I’m sure I lost quite the few potential users while I was working on the update. But 2.5.4 is out and works great on Leopard. Plus 2.6 will include some awesome Leopard only features, so it’s only getting better. No matter how long it takes! =)

I’m bad with math, I admit that
I’d be happy to pay again for the new version (2.6) when it’s released. I paid for the personal use version a while back for 20 dollars. Will I have to pay 35 dollar or the difference (15 dollars) or the difference to the 24.95 which would be 4.95 dollars. I’m confused. Math is hard
Either way, I’m willing to pay it since this is like my fave app and I’d be happy to support ya!
Keep up the good work and hopefully peeps shall start buying the app, because it is one of the best apps and definitely THE best journal app.

Hey Phil, lads…
Well, I have to congratulate you for moving on with what, to me, is indeed (now I am in some sort of doubt) the best blogging application ever created for MAC OSers. Here’s my comment…
I just couldn’t understand why you lads would piece-off the built-in blogging component. Personally, and that is merely my humble opinion as a user, that right there is indeed what actually takes Journler to a true “different” level in comparison with some of the money-butchers out there.
I totally support the growth and development of such interesting products as Journler, but I am feeling the news to be rather not very much digestible for the moment. Perhaps it’s the timing and changes combined, I am yet to figure it out. I would definitely consider paying for the upgrade, should the new Journler provided the great built-in blogging app within it.
Anyway, I will be watching.
For now, I am sticking to the good golden old one V-2.5 (no upgrades in sight for me yet).
Congrats, sort of, but true congrats.
Best Cheers.

help! i just downloaded 2.5.4 yesterday after my 1.1.62 search function stopped working (update:later, to my horror, i discovered that data is completely gone). i created two folders with stored data on the 2.5.4 version and when i attempted to use the application today i got error messages including “unable to load search index.” i was then given a message about “new licensing” or something like that. when the application was up and running the folders and the new data was gone. i am not really computer savvy, so i am hoping someone can help me out. i have much of the old 1.1.62 data backed up but i cannot get it to upload properly on the new version.

update: im not sure why but 2.5 seems to be working find now. i have, however, to glitches:
1. i can scroll through files that migrated from 1.1, but i cannot search for them in the new version.
2. the folder i created has reappeared, but the file that i put in an awful lot of work and time into is still missing, so i am bit worried about the stability of the application.

Is there a way to gain access to the application/the old entry files if the password protection was not disabled before installation? I accidentally clicked the “install” button before disabling the password properly, and now the password protection refuses to take my old password.
I love the product, and I am sorry to be without it because I made a silly mistake :-/
